High-speed living has become a fact of life, and the frantic pace is taking its toll. “We

do feel that we’re more time-driven and time-obsessed and generally  rushed than ever

before.  We may also be acting morehastily, l osing  control,  and  thinking  superficially

because  we  live  faster.” writes Gleick in Faster: The Acceleration of Just About

Everything, a survey of fast moving culture and its consequences.

Technology has conditioned us to expect instant results. Internet purchases arrive by

next-day delivery and the microwave delivers a hot meal in minutes. Faxes, emails and

cell phones make it possible for people to work faster. But high  expectations  for  instant

service make even the brief wait for an elevator seem interminable. A good waiting time is

in the neighborhood of 15 seconds. Sometimes around 40 seconds people start to get

visibly upset. We are  dependent  on  systems that promise speed but often deliver

frustration.  For  example,  rush-hour  drivers  flare up when a single accident halts the

evening commute. People  surfing  the  Internet  becomes  impatient  if a Web page is

slow to load or when access is not instantaneous.

Up-tempo loving has turned people into multitaskers — eating  while  driving, writing

an email while talking on the phone, or skimming dozens  of  television  programs  on

split  screen.  Gleick suggests  that  human  beings  may  be  capable  of  adjusting  to

these  new  levels  of stimuli as high-speed  culture  challenges  our brains  “in a way

they were not challenged in the past, except perhaps in times of war.” We may gain the

flexibility to do several things at once but lose some of our capacity of focus in depth on

single task.

Although we hurry to keep up, this does  not  make  us  victims,  according  to  Gleick.

In  fact, many people seem to prefer a life of speed to dawdling in  the  slow  lane.  A

faster  lifestyle  can deliver  the  benefit  of connectedness — by phone and email

especially — and greater status for those who believe that being super busy is a sign of

importance.

Good  management  can  help  us  cope  with  faster  lives,  according to Gleick. We

an use modern technology assertively in order to maintain more personal control. Above

all, he advises, we can decelerate by adjusting our perspective; we can remember, after

all, that a day still offers 24 hours. Neither technology nor efficiency can acquire more

time for you, because time is not a thing that you have lost. It is not a thing you have ever

had.  It is what you live in. You  can  drift  or you can swim, and it will carry you along

either way.

1.【答案】  A

“Although we hurry to keep up, this does not make us victims (虽然我们匆忙地快节

Above all, he advises,

we can decelerate by adjusting our perspective; we can remember, after all, that a

day still offers 24 hours. Neither technology nor efficiency can acquire more time for

5. 【答案】  A

Acceleration of Just About Everything》的评述审。

of  fast moving culture and its consequences,也就是说论述“快节奏生活的对人们的
