because of      普通用语,使用范广,表示做某事或产生某事的直接原因,可表示

的原因,也可以表示不好的原因,在句中多用作状语。

 

    1)Because of his long illness, he is backward in his studies.

         因为长时间生病,他功课落后了。

    2)Because of the recent accidents, our parents forbid my brother and me to swim

         in the river unless someone agrees to watch over us.   

         由于最近的发生的事故,我们的父母不允许我和哥哥到河里游泳,除非有人同意看着我

         们。

    3)All the planes were socked in yesterday because of the thick mist.

         由于雾大,昨天所有的飞机都停飞了。

    4)Endangered species are animals that are in danger of dying out completely, often 

         because of overexploitation by humans.   

         濒危物种是指处于完全灭绝危险的动物,经常是由于人类过度利用所致。

    5)The lives of many people have been enriched because of adult education.

         许多人的生活由于受了成人教育而变得更加充实。

 

owing to    可用作状语或表语。用作状语时,与 because of 同义,语气上不如

because of 强。用作表语时,表示“……是由……造成的”

   

    1)Owing to his careless driving, we had a bad accident.

         由于他驾驶疏忽,我们发生了次大车祸。

    2)Owing to ill health, he will remain in the south all winter.

         由于健康状况不佳,整个冬天他都会呆在南方。

   3)Owing to the improvement in irrigation, the area of arable land has been 

         greatly increased.

         由于该地区的灌溉技术改进,可耕地的面积大幅增加。

   4)Nowhere in nature is aluminum found free, owing to its always being 

        combined with other elements, most commonly with oxygen.

        在自然界找不到游离状态的铝,因为铝总是跟其他元素结合在一起,最常见的是跟氧结

        合。

   5)The accident was owing to his careless driving.

         这次车祸是由于他的驾驶疏忽造的。

   6)The failure of the talk was owing to their stubborn attitude on the problem.

         谈判的失败是由于他们在这问题上的顽固态度造成的。

 

due to   用于较庄重的书面语中,多作表语,表示造成的原因,与 owing to 用法

相同。due to  也可用作状语,只引出造成不好结果的原因。

 

     1)The disease is due to a virus.

          这种病是由病毒造成的。

     2)His success was largely due to luck.

          他的成功多半是靠运气。

     3)That Shelley became a poet may have been due to his mother’s influence.

          雪莱成为诗人可能是由于受母亲的影响。

     4)The accident was due to a fault in the signal mechanism of the highway.

          这次事故是由于高速公路信号机制出了故障。

 

     5)This flight will be called off due to the big fog weather. Please forgive us for 

          any inconvenience.

          由于大雾的天气这班航班将被取消,对造成的不便之处敬请谅解。

     6)A part of the energy is wasted in machines due to friction.

           一部分能量由于摩擦而消耗在机器内。

     7)Rescuers had to call off the search due to worsening weather.

          由于天气越来越坏,救援人员只得停止搜索。

 

    8)Accidents due to driving at high speed were very common at weekends.

         在周末因高速驾驶造成的交通事故很多。

     9)All loss due to improper packing shall be born by the seller

          由于包装不当而引起的一切损失均应由卖方负责。

 

thanks to    thanks to 带有含“多亏”意味,多用于表示产生好的结果的原因。

 

    1)Thanks to the generous donation from the public, the victims in the flooded 

          areas came through the natural disaster.

          多亏公众的慷慨捐赠,洪水地区的受害者度过了这场自然灾害。

    2)Thanks to your help, we accomplished the task ahead of schedule.

         亏得你们帮忙,我们才提前完成了任务。

    3)Thanks to an explosion of research, we now knows how to prevent and control 

          many diseases.

          由于进行了大量的研究工作,我们现在知道如何预防和控制许多疾病。

    4)Thanks to his presence of mind, all the passengers on board were resued

         由于他沉着冷静,船上所有旅客们得救了。

 

on account of      与 because of 同义,但语气较为正式。多用作状语,偶尔用作

表语,相当于短语  owing to 或 due to 的用法。

 

    1)The flight was cancelled on account of bad weather.

         因为天气恶劣,航班取消了。

    2)He invited her to dinner, but she declined on account of urgent business.

         他邀请她一起吃晚餐,可是由于有紧急的事要处理她婉言谢绝了。

    3)I think that our company should adopt a more feasible strategy on account of 

         the changing market conditions.

         由于市场环境不断变化,我认为我们的公司应该采取更可行的策略。

    4)We claim an allowance of £230 000 on account of the quality of this shipment.

         由于这批货物的质量问题,我们向你方索赔230,000英镑、

    5)So far as I know, his resignation is on account of failing health.  

         据我所知,他辞职的原因是由于健康状况不佳。(用作表语)

 

on the ground of   侧重指“以……为理由”“以……为借口”,从语气上更强调

原因。常用 on the ground of, 冠词 the 有时省略,还可说 on grounds of 。

 

    1)He was obliged to retire at early fifty on the ground of his failing health.

         由于健康状况不佳,他不得不在50岁就早早退休。

    2)The insurance company is likely to refuse compensation on the ground of 

         improper packing, or packing unsuitable for sea voyage.

         保险公司会借口包装不当、或包装不适合于海运为由而拒绝赔偿。

    3)No plea can be set up on the ground of ignorance.

         以无知为理由而提出的抗辩是不能成立的。

    4)He refused to disclose what had been told him, on the ground of his promise 

         to keep secret.

         他拒绝吐露人家告诉他的事,理由是他承诺保守秘密。

    5)We have to stay at home on grounds of the heavy rain.

          因下大雨,我们不得不呆在家里。

 

in view of     侧重指“鉴于(由于)出现某种情况,因而 …… ”,“考虑到某种

情况……, 因此……”。

 

    1) In view of your departure tomorrow, can you spare me a few moments to 

          talk over the problem?

          鉴于你明天就要离开,你能借我几分钟讨论一下这个问题吗?

    2)In view of the recent development, they are advised not take any action for the 

          time being.

          鉴于最近的发展,眼下他们最好不要采取任何行动。

    3)In view of the feeble health,we persuaded him not to go field scientific 

         expedition with us.

         鉴于他身体虚弱,我们说服他不要随我们一起去野外科学考察。

    4)In view of the present situation, we'll have to revise our original plan.

         基于目前这种情况,我们不得不修改原来的计划。

    5)In view of our long-standing relationship, we agree to allow you a discount.

        考虑到我们长期的关系,我方同意给你方折扣。

 

by reason of     用法与 on (the) ground of 相似,强调原因。

 

    1)The arrangement was cancelled by reason of his illness.

         因为他生病,原先的安排被取消了。

    2)He is dismissed by reason of neglect of his duty.

         由于玩忽职守他被免职了。

    3)Mr. Mark’s lawyer pleaded him not guilty of crime by reason of his insanity.

         马克先生的律师为他作无罪辩护,因为他患有精神错乱症。

    4)He put in for his job transferring by reason of not adapting to the present job.

         他提出调动工作的请求,原因是他不适应目前的工作。

    5)He is consulted regarding such problems by reason of his long experience.

         因为他有丰富的经验,所以有关这样的问题都请教他。

 

by virtue of     侧重指“凭靠”,“凭借”的意思,也可表示“由于”原因, 有时

也说 in virtue of 。

 

     1)He had won the game by virtue of his strength of will.

          他靠意志力赢了这场比赛。

     2)The player defeated his rivals by virtue of greater experience.

          这位选手凭借更丰富的经验战胜了对手。

     3)He was given an important position in the company by virtue of his long 

          association with the broad.

          他凭靠与董事局长期的关系在公司谋得一个重要职位。

     4)She is allowed to do as she wishes by virtue of the fact that she is the 

          manager's daughter.

          她可为所欲为,因为她是经理的女儿。

     5)By virtue of its super quality, this product is often sold out in many areas.

          这种产品因其卓越的品质常常在许多地区卖到断货。

 

     6)He became a champion at last in virtue of his perseverance.

          凭着坚韧不拔的精神,他终于成为冠军。

     7)Plastic bags are useful for holding many kinds of food, in virtue of theire 

          clearness, toughness, and low cost.        

          塑料袋可用来装各种食品,因为它清洁,耐用又价廉。

 

as a result of     侧重指“由于······的结果”而产生,表示原因的意味较重,主

句谓语动词的产生是“由于······的结果”。

 

      1)However, as a result of the heavy demand for organs, a new moral dilemma

           has emerged.

           然而,由于对器官需求量激增产生了新的道德困境。

      2)Two people have already died as a result of the accident, and the lives of 

            several others are in danger.

           由于这次事故已有两人死亡,还有好些人的生命正处在危险之中。

     3)The two particles will undergo accelerations as a result of their interaction.

           这两个粒子由于相互作用将获得加速度。

     4)Divorce rate is going up year by year as a result of the involvement of the 

          other men or women.

          由于第三者插足,离婚率逐年上升。

    5)As a result of technical innovation, the steel mill chalked up new records in their 

         average daily output.

         由于技术革新的结果,这个钢铁厂在平均日产量中创造了新记录。
